UNIVERSITY of BRITISH COLUMBIA

The University of British Columbia has been growing, in size and in ranking, since its founding at the turn of the 20th century. Gateway and hub activations announce to visitors that they have arrived at the threshold of UBC, recognize capital campaign contributors, and create student pride as points of gathering and photo opportunities.

Our approach was to adapt the UBC brand typography for use in three-dimensional spaces. Oversized stainless steel letters announce the eastern-most gateway to the UBC campus.

A more playful feature is conceptualized at a central hub on campus. UBC’s motto “Tuum Est”, meaning “it is yours”, is laid horizontal and extruded at varying heights, conducive to gathering, sitting and lounging, allowing students and staff to make it their own experience.
